April 21, 2012 . . . a beautiful Saturday to go on a hike! We met another family for a hike at a place called "The Tents." The official name is Kasha-Katuwe Rocks National Park. The park was about an hour away. We hiked down a normal trail that led to a slot canyon. I have never hiked a slot canyon before, but it was so cool!
In the picture below, the bluff on the left was our destination! I had some doubts initially, but once we were all the way at the top it was so worth the effort.
Entering the slot canyon . . . my little hiker is leading the group! This tree was the perfect hiding spot for the kids to "surprise" us! The root structure was awesome.
It was hard to tell how this rock fell into this spot. The kids were able to easily traverse under the rock, the adults had to duck!
The beautiful rock formations that lined the canyon. . .
A preview of what was to come . . .
We enjoyed spending the morning together as a family! Looking forward to hiking more this summer.
The kids hiking through the narrowest location in the canyon.
The scene that awaited us after we hiked through the canyon . . .
The national park is named "the tents" after the bedouin tent appearance to the rock formation. The rocks were formed by volcanic activity in the area 6 to 7 million years ago. It was incredible!
The snow in the foreground is the mountains of Santa Fe. Once we were at the top, the Taos mountains were visible.
Me and my super trooper!
Looking down at the rock formations from above . . .
A little snack at the top of the hill. All four kids (five including one in a backpack) made it to the top!
Mission accomplished . . . we made it to the top!
The kids taking a break on the way back down!
All of us taking a break on the way back down . . .Eleanor marveling at how the rocks got shaped that way!
The kids tried as hard as they could to keep this boulder in place . . . it was a team effort.
A look up on our way out!
I was able to sneak a picture of Matt in while he hiked!
I hope to hike more slot canyons. It was so amazing!
Another view of the striations in the rocks. What an amazing creation!
